So. I have something I'd like to get off my chest. This'll probably turn into a rant, and is focused on Wings of Fire, so I'm sorry if you've got no clue what I'm talking about, haha!
I REALLY like Wings of Fire. Being a dragon nerd, I really love the setting, the characters, the lore - you name it, I love it. And I also love certain aspects of the fandom, such as the fanart and fanvideos and fanfictions, it's all so wonderful.
What I severely dislike, however, is certain members of this fandom that would like to dictate to me and other people, what we can and cannot like about this franchise. And should we dare deviate from this assigned path, we will be deemed as "toxic" or "problematic".
A prime example: Darkstalker is my favorite character in the entire franchise. I love him. He's charming and wickedly entertaining. When I was reading the books, I was captivated. Very rarely have I ever had a character made me feel so sorry for him I nearly cried, and then, a few pages later, terrify me! He is a complicated and messed up character. But one I find fascinating because I'm always wondering: "What is going on inside his head? What is his real motivation? How does he really feel about all this right now?"
But can I be allowed to enjoy the things I like? Big. Fat. Nope. Wherever I go in this community, I see certain loud individuals proclaiming that the characters I like are problematic and therefore that makes me problematic as well for liking it. Again, to correlate with the example above: They will say: "Darkstalker killed IceWings! Darkstalker manipulated other dragons to do his bidding! If you like him, you're gross!"
Like... do you seriously think I don't know that and/or that I'm okay with that? What the hell do you even mean? Was I shouting from the rooftops that "Darkstalker was right to kill all the IceWings! Bring him back!" NO! I know he did wrong, but I still found him entertaining as a character!
Honestly, these people should go after everyone who dares to like a Disney villain. I mean, "they killed people! They manipulated people! How DARE your find them even remotely entertaining?!" By the gods, "Hellfire" from Hunchback of Notre Dame, is universally claimed to be the best Disney villain song, it has hundreds of covers on youtube. Does that mean everyone thinks Frollo was okay? No! But he (and his song) was entertaining! Lots of people love Darth Vader: he's tragic, he's intimidating, he's powerful and scary, and he is badass. Yes, he did terrible things. But the people that like him - are they advocating that we should all be more like him in real life? No! We just like an entertaining character.
Yes, Darkstalker killed and/or manipulated other characters. And???
Tsunami also killed her father. Peril has murdered DOZENS of dragons, including eggs that hadn't even hatched yet. Sunny manipulated ALL the tribes to put her mother in a position of power using a prophecy SHE KNEW was fake. Starflight made his entire tribe, who were in fear for their lives, swear away their own sovereignty and surrender their entire culture in order to be assimilated into another.
There is not ONE character in this entire franchise that is squeaky clean. THAT IS THE POINT.
I swear, why can't people just let us have our fav characters? We know they're problematic. We're not saying what they did was right. We're just saying we find them entertaining. And when we write our fanfictions/do our fanart of these characters doing better in a better life, that is because we want to see them become LESS problematic. Like therapy. So leave us in peace!
Sorry about that. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
(Now. Let's get on with my Darkstalker fanfic, shall we? *sips tea*)
